Winslow's BBQ - Kansas City, MO

Winslow’s BBQ in the River Market area of Downtown Kansas City is, simply put, awesomely different. BBQ has never been on the top of my list of culinary adventures. It’s all usually pretty good. Meats smoked for a very, very long time to tenderness, and then slathered by your choice of sauces ranging from very sweet to different degrees of spicy.
Good stuff, but always gut busting afterwords. The usual lines, smoke, and marginal service aren’t a draw for me either.
Here’s where Winslow’s steps up and shines. Though we did wait for quite a while, after I got the manager’s attention we were finally greeted by a radiant, smiling, and knowledgeable waitress. The usual fare was, well, usual. The ribs a bit fatty, the burnt ends were burnt, and the beer was cold. Then it happened. Something different and wonderful. Read on.
I know that Kansas City houses very many famous places like Jack Stack and Oklahoma Joe’s, and so on--but here’s why you have to visit Winslow’s if you’re in the area. There are actually three specific “must-haves”: Moose Drool, Cheesy Corn, and the pièce de résistance; the “Fire Pulled Pork”.
My analysis/recommendation:
Begin with a pint or three of Moose Drool. This is the only place that I’ve ever seen it or even heard of it. Moose Drool is a chewy, creamy brown ale brewed by Big Sky Brewing Co. A most excellent way to wash down tangy BBQ sauce and mouthfuls of meat.
The Cheesy Corn. This was such a sweet, cheesy, and tasty treat of a side dish. According to the waitress, the corn is mixed with a blend of melted cream cheese and nacho cheese with a dab of a secret ingredient. The secret was the run off from the cooked hams. I can’t stress enough how this blend was so melt-in-your-mouth unbelievable.
Now for the pièce de résistance, the Fire Pulled Pork sandwich. This was a pile of sliced pork (not pulled, but oh-so-tender) served on toasted Jalapeno Bread, drenched in a Kansas Style tomato based sauce. The pork, after hours of smoking, is soaked overnight in a Habanero and Tequila marinade. Get this. Let me say it again. Get this.
One more time with adjectives. This tender and zesty pork sandwich served on firm, seasoned bread, all topped with an unbelievably rich sauce after being marinated overnight in a nectar-of-the-gods marinade is second to none. Enjoy!
The outdoor deck is the largest I’ve seen in Kansas City and overlooks the Farmer’s Market. You can’t go wrong. Bon appétit!
